What is Stronghold?

It is an evidence-informed program that combines counselors, marksmanship instructors, and public health experts to increase safety among Veterans and their families. The program begins with a counseling session designed specifically for Veterans and Caregivers at the Ecumenical Center (in the San Antonio Medical Center Area). Then, we will hit the range for safety instruction and experience at Nardis Gun Range (Alamo Ranch).

This is not just about education but interactive hands-on skills training for Veterans and Caregivers. While we aim to reduce the risk of harm, we also provide an opportunity for camaraderie and community building among the participants.

Upon successfully completing the program, each Veteran and Caregiver team receives a safe gun for personal firearm storage.

Requirements

  • Veterans and caregivers must live together to qualify for the program.

  • The Veteran and the caregiver need to be willing to complete an eligibility assessment

  • Both the Veteran and Caregiver must commit to attending the entirety of both sessions.
